Zim Ngqawana was born in 1959, the youngest of five children. Ngqawana who started playing flute at the age of 21, dropped out of school prior to meeting university entrance requirements but won entrance to a place at Rhodes University. It was at Rhodes that his formal music education began. In the 1980’s he studied for a diploma in Jazz Studies at the University of Natal, a diploma established by Darius Brubeck. Ngqawana was a member of the university band, the Jazzanians, led by Darius Brubeck and this band performed at a jazz educators’ convention in the US in 1988. As a result of this tour he was offered scholarships to the Max Roach/Wynton Marsalis jazz workshop and later a scholarship to the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he studied with jazz musicians Archie Shepp and Yusef Lateef.

After his return to South Africa in the 1990s Ngqawana worked with South African jazz musicians Hugh Masekela and Abdullah Ibrahim. On 10 May 1994 Zim Ngqawana was the musical director for the inauguration of South Africa’s first democratically elected president, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.
He collaborated on the album San Song by the Norwegian ensemble San with Bjorn Ole Solburg. Zim Nqawana composed two of the songs on the album, namely “San Song” and “Migrant Workers”. He toured the United States with his band “Ingoma” in 1995, and he made an appearance at Black History Week in Chicago.

He performed a duet with poet Lefifi Tladi in the documentary Giant Steps (2005), and worked with Skwatta Camp in 2008 for the Coca Cola compilation The Collaboration on a song titled It Gets No Better. In January 2010, Ngqawana’s Zimology Institute was vandalised by scrap metal thieves. Zim performed a duet concert in the rubble of the vandalised building, in the Vaal region south of Johannesburg with pianist Kyle Shepherd. The performance was filmed as ‘The Exhibition Of Vandalizimiop’ by Aryan Kaganof and Vandalizim concerts were later performed at the MOMO Gallery in Johannesburg and at a scrap yard in Stellenbosch, organised by Stellenbosch University’s music department and DOMUS.

In 2008 Zim Ngqawana performed at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival with his Zimology Quartet

, a performance recorded and released late 2013 on both CD and DVD. He has also won 5 awards at the annual South African Music Awards over the 20 years that the awards have been in existence.

On 10 May 2011, he died at the age of 52 after suffering a stroke.
