The Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band - V-Disc sessions. Captain Glenn Miller. Volume One (Oct 29, 1943 - May 13, 1944)
Glenn Miller's Army Air Force Band was the finest group that he ever led. Although they did not make any commercially available recordings, the huge outfit did perform 43 songs for V-Discs that were sent to servicemen overseas. The earliest 22 cuts are included on this first of two rewarding CDs. Mood pieces and novelty vocals alternate with some fine jazz, showing the wide variety of music that this impressive group (which often had a full string section) could generate. Highlights include "St. Louis Blues March," "Tail End Charlie," "G.I. Jive," "Stealin' Apples," and "Here We Go Again." Although the exact personnel is not given, clarinetist Peanuts Hucko, pianist Mel Powell, and trumpeter Bobby Nichols are all heard from. The Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band - V-Disc sessions. Major Glenn Miller. Volume Two (May 20, 1944 - Nov 17, 1945)
The second of two Mister Music CDs that reissue all of the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band's V-Disc recordings gets the edge over the first, due to its stronger jazz content. With top soloists in trumpeter Bobby Nichols, clarinetist Peanuts Hucko, and pianist Mel Powell, along with singer Johnny Desmond and the Crew Chiefs, Miller's huge orchestra performs such numbers as "Everybody Loves My Baby," "Poinciana," "I Hear You Screamin," "Sun Valley Jump," and "Holiday for Strings," in addition to worthy remakes of "Little Brown Jug" and "Chattanooga Choo Choo." This CD concludes with five numbers from October to November 1945, long after Glenn Miller's plane went down over the English channel. One can hear the influence of bebop on the group during "Passage Interdit" and "7-0-5," making one wonder what direction Glenn Miller's music would have gone in if he had lived. Recommended.
