The Berlin band Rasgueo impressively bridges the gap between jazz, flamenco, Latin and folk. With "Waterfall" jazz trumpeter Martin Auer and Greek guitarist Nikos Tsiachris manage to put their instruments into a passionate dialogue and to create eight wonderfully atmospheric titles.
Miles Davies' album "Sketches of Spain" already proved that flamenco and jazz can form a wonderful symbiosis. How fertile this mixture is still and what further development it has completed can be heard in the Berlin band Rasgueo. The four musicians sensitively deal with the elements of the various styles and create sound images that marvelously connect flamenco, jazz and world music.
Leader and founder of the band is the 1979 born in Greece flamenco guitarist Nikos Tsiachris. At the age of 8, he received guitar lessons from his father, an outstanding amateur musician, whom he often listened to when playing Greek and Spanish guitar pieces. However, the great enthusiasm for flamenco in particular arose only in music studies. Inspired by his fellow student, a Greek flamenco guitarist, Tsiachris first became acquainted with so-called flamenco falsetas, solo passages characteristic of the flamenco guitar. This musical experience changed Tsiachris' life completely and flamenco has since shaped his musical career.
When the Greeks went to Germany for love, he met bassist Martin Lillich as part of a flamenco project. He managed to inspire Lillich for the flamenco, so that the two musicians acted as a duo henceforth. Tsiachris actually had the idea of adding a trumpet fifteen years ago when he heard Vicente Amigo's second album "Vivencias Imaginadas". The encounter with the jazz trumpeter, Martin Auer was therefore very convenient. Also this was right after the first session with the duo fire and flames for the project. To complete the rhythm, the virtuoso Uruguayan drummer Diego Piñera completed the trio. Since 2012, the quartet is in the current cast.
Rasgueo's compositions usually come from Tsiachris' many different musical ideas, which compare composing with composing a puzzle or painting a picture. If such a picture is in its basics, he introduces it to the band. Through feedback and suggestions for change by the other band members, musical images are created that bear the power of all musicians.
