Исполнитель: Mary Lou WilliamsНазвание альбома: The Asch Recordings, 1944-47 Год выпуска: 1977, Folkways Records Формат файлов: Mp3, 192 Размер архива: Record I - 78 Mb, Record II - 71 Mb Скачать с: rusfolder This double set brings together thirty-five sides recorded by Mary Lou Williams for Moses Asch between 1944 and 1947. Twenty-eight of these songs were previously only released on 78 rpm, and this collection includes solo and trio performances, as well as small-group and big band recordings.
Williams's style was in a state of transition as she was gradually discarding stride piano and developing a much more boppish approach. Among her sidemen are trumpeters Frankie Newton, Dick Vance, Bill Coleman (who is well-featured), and Kenny Dorham, clarinetist Edmund Hall, trombonist Vic Dickenson, and tenors Don Byas and Coleman Hawkins.
In 1944-47 Williams couldn't interest a respectable label in her music and so turned to Moses Asch. Asch was able to keep his Folkways label alive for several years by not paying royalties and recording with cheap equipment that produced thin sound with lots of surface noise. This has been faithfully preserved on the Smithsonian's cd-r issue. There are no track or personnel listings although this info can be found on a barely legible photocopy of the lp booklet which is included as a pdf file. Those with sharp ears will be able to make out some exceptional music behind the crackling. Delightful Williams compositions and arrangements for solo piano or small to medium ensembles featuring many of the best musicians of the day. There are several earlier and later Williams recordings available with much better sound, but fanatics will want this one for the unique sessions. http://www.amazon.com/
