Mark Murphy might be other things -all good. It's actually pretty hard to catalogue his easy, swinging style, for it's simply a natural musicianly style. Whatever one might choose to call it, however, Mark's approach to a song has already gained him cheers from all sides: critics speak highly of his performances: people who've heard in clubs and in his first Capital album, "The Start of Something," are building a strong network of Murphy fans; and other performers admire his work - one of the finest tributes that can be paid to an artist. Here is what one of Mark's staunch advocates has to say about him and about this album: Those of us who love music say "bravo" ...or "hurray" ... or perhaps a more modern expression of approval when a singer like Mark Murphy comes along. Mark Murphy sings for the sheer joy of singing and then he listens critically and, at times, almost painfully. This is only one of his admirable musical traits. It is obvious in observing him that he hears so much, wishes to express so much that he has begun to express it. When something is done for the love of a job well done, the listener can hear it; and Mark sings for the love of it. It has been said by Bill Holman (who is so highly regarded in the field of arranging, and justly so) that Mark can truly be called a musician. He has shown that in this album, because he has chosen a variety of song to be arranged by that highly regarded Bill Holman, who in turn has arranged them in a most interesting, colorful way. Next, the arrangements are performed by some of the finest jazz musicians and singers in the United States, if not the world. Having worked with most of them, I can sincerely say that it has been a privilege, also one of the most beautiful ways to make s living. They are inspiring, to say the least. Listen closely to the soloists, please, and you';; find it a pleasing experience. (They are listed separately and you may wish to start your own fan club.) The talent for singing is one of life's finest gifts and about Mark, personally, it can be said that he appreciates that gift and works diligently to uphold what is good in the "old" and to bring out the "new." He phrases at times like a horn; and a horn with a modern sound. As the expression goes, you might say, "He blows"... and he's attractive, single.
