One of many star alumni to emerge from the jazz program at North Texas State University, alto saxophonist Jim Snidero shines on his fourth disc as a leader. Accompanied by pianist Mulgrew Miller, bassist Peter Washington, and drummer Jeff Hirshfield, Snidero's studio set includes six stimulating originals. The percolating post-bop vehicle "Fast Lane" is a sizzling opener, followed by the rather straightforward ballad "Takin' It Easy," which lopes along at an easygoing tempo. His tense waltz "Break Away" is a jewel with many facets. Snidero also salutes a pair of veteran saxophonists. His brisk rendition of Sam Rivers' "Beatrice" and caressing treatment of Wayne Shorter's lush "Virgo" should be first-rate in anyone's book. To top it off, the rhythm section is on Snidero's wavelength without fail throughout the session, achieving nothing less than perfection. This Ken CD is well worth snapping up. Ken Dryden, AMG
