Pianist George Cables made several rewarding dates for Contemporary during the late '70s and early '80s, but this disc has never even been offered on CD and languishes unjustly out of print. This LP is primarily a showcase for Cables' compositions, though his moving interpretation of Benny Golson's "I Remember Clifford" features a long piano solo before the rhythm section joins him. Joe Farrell's flute is added for the light and airy, Latin-flavored "Beyond Forever" and a catchy soul-jazz original, "The Phantom." One gets a better idea of Cables' technique in his fascinating solo feature, "Circle." Rufus Reid opens "Love Song" with an unforgettable bass solo and is prominent throughout this captivating work. The only disappointing track is "Thank You, Thank You," with the leader switching to electric piano and clavinet for a brisk but rather dated-sounding funk piece that leans toward what would eventually be called smooth jazz. But one dud is hardly a reason to avoid making a search for this rewarding LP.

Огромное спасибо, дорогой Glam! Вы невольно сделали мне доргой подарок и улучшили настроение в хмурый ноябрьский московский вечер! Я особенно интересуюсь записями этого пианиста в таком стиле, а их, как я понимаю, не очень много. Кстати, в информации не указано, что Кэйблс играет и на электропиано. Считаю такое уточнение принципиально важным для этого альбома.
