Another odds and sods release compiled from outtakes of sessions that took place between 1955 and 1962 in settings ranging from piano trios to full orchestras to tide listeners over while Gene Ammons was serving an extended drug-related prison sentence, 1965's Sock! is basically a mess. The ten brief songs are strung together with no thought given to sound or segues, and the material itself is pretty weak, with the opening "Blues for Turfers" and the deadly-dull jive of "Rock-Roll" particular offenders. Many of the albums Prestige released during Ammons' incarceration are well-chosen selections selected and sequenced with an eye for consistency of mood, and as such, they stand up so well that they've been reissued on CD alongside his proper albums. Sock!, on the other hand, is such a botch that less than half of the album's songs have since appeared on CD.

A striking title – and a strong set of grooves, even if the tracks were pulled from a variety of different sessions, and not recorded as a unified album. Jug plays tenor on all cuts – working in formats that range from a Mal Waldron led trio to larger honking groups with horn players like Henderson Chambers, Cecil Payne, Nate Woodward, and Gene Easton. Tracks are short, and most are
pretty rocking – with titles that include "Blue Coolade", "Short Stop", "Scam", "Sock", "What I Say", and "Rock Roll".
