HelpDaynaStephens.Org in Gm, Part 1 is certainly an intriguing song title, and the anguished tune and driving rhythm section can only add to the sense of urgency. Some tasty sax lines are played, and a general sense of unrest is created. Bittersweet Jelly (Why Is It So Easy To Love) opens and closes with a lilting piano solo, which is effective in framing the narrative of the song. The nuances of the melody fit in with the pushing and pulling piano part. Replays are demanded to fully immerse yourself in the pensive mood that Bittersweet Jelly (Why Is It So Easy To Love) creates.
Jonathan describes himself as a ‘storyteller’ and this is evident throughout the album, with the song Retrograde painting what I imagine a woeful tale. The lack of song descriptions mean that it is the listener’s decision what story they think Jonathan is depicting with each melody. Vol II finishes with People Like Them, an introspective piano and sax duet, featuring Jonathan playing a delicate melody over dissonant, cascading piano chords.
Overall, Jonathan Greenstein has created a cohesive ambiance with Vol II. Look elsewhere for boundary-pushing work, but Vol II is an album that will take you on a journey, and act as a canvas that can inspire stories and reflection.
