This is a record with a charm of its own ; a record which, by its very simplicity, should earn a place in any jazz library.
The easiest way to describe it to an audience sated with ultra-modern and sustained antiquity is as a kind of Granz Jam Session-but on Lester Young rather than Flip Phillips principles. Somehow, I think Lester would have liked to be on this session. The rhythm section has a steady cutting persistence, and the soloists just ride along in front of it. Edmond Hall goes straight into Russian Lullaby ; later, he shows a ferocity unknown among today's clarinettists. Sir Charles, Dickenson and Braff follow with easily stated solos, and keep you on your toes right through. Jeepers Creeper starts with the briefest ensemble then recipe as before. This is not music specially for modernists or specially for trads. It is music for anyone who wants to hear jazz without gimmicks and prejudices. Liner Note
