A sweet reminder Granny's hay days were young, wild and carefree once upon a time. Songs detailing young people engaged in all kinds of mischief in their less than sanitised past. This is a wide panorama of recollection. Ranges from post WW1 feel good times to long term depression, rising once again with post WW2 affluence. Between these goalposts the tunes, bang, swing, lament and croon their wanton way to the eventual economic success, we all know and love. Courtesy of the greatest free market system the world has ever seen these tunes unfold. Odes to Al Capone's version of Adam Smith's market economy abound. Free Market means exchange and the hidden hand of the market regulating the level of transactions to create an equitable market playing field. Al, ranting on the reds in the sleeve notes, chose a more hands on approach to accumulate his personal wealth. These tunes epitomise market interventions. Gangsta Rap, new? No! Here lie the stamped brass knuckle templates. They twist, turn and lament with double entendre to circumnavigate the thought police of the day. They scribe the life of the poor, downtrodden and beaten, subject to various strands of institutional revenge for their apparent low level misdeeds; the ones with bars in their eyes. They echo with a pathos of the era. Whilst todays tunes extend a middle digit to the man, these perceive the reality of quick success as ultimately flawed. Easy money, easy go, its evaporation marking the eternal curse of brutalised poverty; banged away in hotel rooms, gushing fountains of champagne swamped with mucus membranes awash in South American produce producing rivers of forget me not. Some of these artists recorded in prison, others murdered or died young in the inevitable automobile accident. These men and women were not rock crooners observing lives but embroiled within its nerve centre. For those who enjoy Robert Johnson, Leadbelly, Blind Lemon and raw unadulterated sounds, this record screams with passion.
