Founded as a Swiss amateur jazz festival in Zurich, it was launched as an International Amateur Jazz Festival in Zurich from 1961, then as an International Jazz Festival in Zurich.
The festival was held between 1951 and 1970 in Kino Urban, from 1971 to 1973 in the neighboring Corso Theater. The initiator was the advertising expert André Berner, son of the Swiss jazz pioneer Ernest Berner. The event, which took place for the first time between September 10 and 15, 1951, was curiously held as a preliminary program for the Kinovorführungen; which facilitated the financing of the event and was maintained in this form until 1969, although the music quickly became the main attraction and the film screenings also lost importance. Due to the favorable entrance fees, the festival offered the audience the unique opportunity to listen to musicians from all over Switzerland.
In the festival there was a competition of amateur groups and musicians, both for the "old style" and for the "modern style" (which initially meant Swing, apart from a Franco Ambrosettis appearance, bands of modern jazz only appeared since 1954) was carried out. Five members of the jury, each of whom judged the musicians and bands on the basis of only two plays, were from 1951 to 1970 (Francis Burger, Walo Linder, Jan Slawe, Harry Pfister and Arthur Goepfert).
In 1954 for the first time lot decisions were needed to select the participating bands. From 1957 regional regional decisions took place in Basel, Lucerne and Winterthur. For a musical continuity during the first festival decade, the New Orleans Wild Cats from Neuchâtel ensured. A highlight in the early 1960s were the performances of the Orchester Henri Chaix. Professional musicians were allowed to perform on the festival only "out of competition" (ie beyond the competition); 1969 was a quarter of the bands from the professional camp, which took over from 1971 the festival.
From 1960 until 1972 an album was published annually, which documented the highlights of the festival, first on ExLibris, 1969 on the label Heco; with the changed conception of the festival MPS was won. Ten years after its founding, the festival, which initially saw itself as a performance show of Swiss jazz, also opened up against international bands. Since 1968, Blues Blues and pop jazz groups have also played there. There were also spontaneous mergers: Alexis Korner juggled with the musicians of Chris McGregor 's Brotherhood of Breath in 1971. 1971 also Weather Report and Osibisa, 1972 Chick Corea played at the festival. George Gruntz, who had repeatedly appeared since the first festival, organized a workshop-band from 1971, which was called "Festival All Stars" - the germ cell of the later concert jazz band.
In 1973 the festival was held for the last time by André Berner, who was supported by Bruno Spoerri in recent years. In 1974, the festival was canceled and then, from 1975 onwards, it was organized under collective management. In the last years of the festival there were also thematic aspects; the jazz scene of the USSR was presented in 1989 (the 4-CD-Box, which documented the festival focus, received the highest rating of 5 stars in the Downbeat).
