Исполнитель: The Derek Smith Trio, Harry Klein Название альбома: Jeff Kruger's Jazz At The Flamingo Vol. 2 Год выпуска: 1955, Decca EP DFE 6266 Формат файлов: Flac Размер архива: 70 Mb Скачать с: rusfolder One evening in the winter of 1954, Derek Smith, Allan Ganley, Freddie Logan and baritone saxist Harry Klein met at a disused film studio in Maida Vale to cut four sides for Jazz at The Flamingo promoter Jeff Kruger. As is customary on casual jazz sessions, the choice of tunes was left till the last possible moment and finally resolved quite accidentally in a restaurant on the way to the studio. Somebody was playing a record of an old gypsy melody called Play Fiddle, Play and Allan Ganley began to tap a rumba rhythm on the table with a spoon. Harry Klein thought that this was an idea for one side. For the other side he chose the last hit the great George Gershwin ever wrote and surely one of his most appealing ballads, Our love is here to stay. Derek Smith is one of the newer stars who has risen to take a place among the country’s acknowledged modernist stars and his exuberant, irrepressible, almost gleeful style is well in evidence here with assistance from the virile drumming of Allan Ganley and the hitherto unheard-of Dutch bassist Freddie Logan who more than complements the group. Derek, in his choice of tunes, also fell back on the old standby, George Gershwin, with They can’t take that away from me and completed the session with the perennial swinger Sweet Georgia Brown. It is not often that this type of semi-organised session captures the spirit of improvisation but on these sides things really ‘went’ and it is hoped that you enjoy listening to them as much as the musicians enjoyed cutting them.
