Исполнитель: The Dan Lamaestra Trio Название альбома: Meditations Год выпуска: 2017 Формат файлов: MP3@320K/s Размер архива: 119,5 MB Скачать с: depositfiles Dan Lamaestra's first album as a leader since "Just a Thought" in 2006, "Meditations" brings together 6 new originals, 1 jazz trio arrangement of a well known Chopin Etude, and 3 gorgeous and soulful solo piano renditions of classic songs.
Joined by Blake Meister on Acoustic Bass, Leland Nokamura on Drums, and Jon Barnes on Trumpet/Flugelhorn, Mr Lamaestra presents the raw and classic sound of a Steinway Grand piano in various formats, evoking, all at once, the technique of pianists like Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, Bob James, Dave Grusin, Hank Jones, Teddy Wilson, Chick Corea, among other influences.
Long a fan of classical piano music, Mr Lamaestra tackled a fresh jazz piano trio version of the first movement of Rachmaninfoff's Piano Concerto #2 for their youtube channel in 2016, and as a followup, has recorded a sparkling new arrangement, courtesy of trumpet player/arranger Jonathan Barnes, of Frederic Chopin's world famous Etude Opus 25, No 1, known to many as the "Aeolian Harp". The wonderful melody is transformed with fresh takes on the harmony and rhythmic structure, giving the piano room to phrase and improvise around the familiar theme as it jumps from A flat to C, to A, and back to A flat like the original.
Of special note, is the brand new "Sapiens Suite". Comprised of three pieces, it is a musical representation of the "three-act" structure of the "Hero's Journey", considered by many writers and mythologists to be the template of all lives. We begin with the “Sapien” first, hunting and gathering and defending, all energy and momentum, driven by hunger, fear, and the collective mystery of the unknown world and universe he sees and feels around him. In “Zazen”, which literally means to “sit in meditation”, this lilting and spare jazz waltz finds our hero realizing he must learn to let go of desire and attachment, only to then find more beauty as he simultaneously foregoes the seeking of it. “Freiden” means “Peace” in German. It is a new melody composed over the harmonic structure of JS Bach’s Prelude in C Minor. Our hero finds peace at the tail end of his life’s journey, and the tune starts in C minor, but ends in the relative major, E Flat, on a simple triad. Once again, the symbolic “rule of 3” appears.
“Piazzollando”, another Lamaestra original, brings the very rarely explored style of tango for jazz piano trio. Astor Piazzolla is one the greats of Argentine tango music, and his influence is prevalent. Note the key changes in the 16 bar piano solo section, inspired by the same approach Astor would use to introduce a violin or piano or guitar solo in his music.
Finally, a special nod to the 1935 classic "Don't Mention Love To Me", a specific arrangement which Mr Lamaestra transcribed from the Ginger Rogers Film where it first appeared, "In Person". It is played in a classic and elegant stride piano style here, complete with an improvisation around the classic and haunting harmonies. Echoes of great pianists like Ellis Larkins, Paul Smith, Hank Jones, and Oscar Peterson can be heard throughout this performance.
Rounding out the set, are two more solo piano features. "It's Easy To Remember" explores the sound of the piano from lush chording to subtle melodic flavoring, with delicate pedaling and consistent execution. This is a classic standard melody that remains a staple of the jazz standard world. "Maria" is more like a bonus track. This version has nods to the classic Maynard Ferguson version, but softer, with the type of piano work that so often happens before or after the microphone is turned on.
Whether you prefer gentle piano trio music, or classic solo performances, or more straight ahead "hard bop" styles, we think you are guaranteed to find something on this recording that will prove a sublime listening experience!
