Numerous musicians have interpreted the works of Thelonious Monk, but few have taken as many chances as Ted Rosenthal does on this 1992 release. After winning an NEA grant to create Images of Monk, he presented his suite in concert with trumpeter Brian Lynch, saxophonist Dick Oatts, violinist Mark Feldman, bassist Scott Colley, and drummer Marvin "Smitty" Smith in the fall of 1992 at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City, and entered the studio with the same musicians a few weeks afterward to record this CD. Rather than take a typical approach to Monk's compositions, he took the essence of them, reharmonizing them and expanding on them in often wild ways, in the form of a continuous suite, with brief interludes of "Brilliant Corners" connecting it all together. Of particular interest are the imaginative "Blues Medley" (consisting of "'Misterioso," "Ba-Lue Bolivar Ba-Lues-Are," "Five Spot Blues," "Straight, No Chaser," and "Blue Monk"); Feldman's adventurous solo in "Let's Call This"; and Rosenthal's own haunting "A Reasonable Doubt," which was inspired in part by Monk's "Evidence." The execution of Rosenthal's charts is superb throughout the entire suite - this is easily one of Ted Rosenthal's finest efforts as a leader and arranger.
