What I find fascinating about this band and its leader is that, unless my ears deceive me, Ted Nash is a Wynton Marsalis disciple: Lots of whole-note melodies over New Orleans second-line rhythms, plus a cover of an Ellington tune ("Amad" from The Far East Suite, a Wynton fave), not to mention a cover of a tune by another composer Mr. Marsalis is very enamored of, Monk. Nash was (is?) a member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, so this is not unexpected.
I'm curious to know whether this means that this recording will be considered trayfe by those opposed to the Marsalis Orthodoxy. I'm even willing to bet some unwitting person has praised this recording without realizing its connection to the Marsalis/Murray/Crouch cabal.
Whatever. As Gary Giddins says, Ted Nash made eclecticism respectable again with this recording, and who am I to disagree? Buy it just to hear Wycliffe Gordon, who has done the impossible thing and made the tuba nimble. Damn he's good! I know nothing whatever about accordion, but Schimmel's playing seems pleasingly un-accordionlike at times; even when it sounds like an accordion, he has none of that wheezy flavor that either makes one cringe or makes one nostalgic, depending upon the circumstance.
