It is no easy matter to combine the piano and guitar well and it takes musicians with the stature of Bill and Louis to bring this off effectively. They compliment each other to perfection and never fall into the trap Mark Hodgsons bass providing the heart beat Stephen Keoghs artful and seductively swinging brushwork Bill of getting in each others way. under Charlaps piano solo contains some beautifully shaped quotes from " West Side Story " which add a touch of wry On Stairway to the Stars, the out of tempohumour to the musical dialogue. statements by the piano and guitar are quite exquisite. On this track the guitar and piano move so closely together andblend so well that they become one voice. Curtains is maybe the one composition on the album that is not so well known. Written by Gerry Mulligan, it is a very pretty tune with some unusual and sophisticated changes of key. This is one of the highlights of the whole CD thanks to the wonderful musicianship of the whole trio. Bill Charlaps treatment of Yardbird Suite is full of playfully tasteful allusions to " Bird " and the vernacular of the world of Be Bop. Blue Lights, the only 12 bar blues on the album features the guitar of Stewart and is also the only tune where the brilliant Stephen Keogh uses sticks. Throughout the rest of the album Keogh drives the rhythm section with great subtlety and impeccable taste with his masterful brushwork. Bassist Mark Hodgson provides a warm toned and relaxed and swinging feel to all the tracks and his solo's on What's New (taken at a slow medium tempo ) and Yardbird suite are brilliantly conceived and executed. Yesterdays opens up a with beautifully elegant, sensitive statement by the guitar and magically answered by some very impressionistic piano harmonies. Charlap showing what a masterful touch and highly developed sense of sound he possesses. Stephen Keoghs brushes are especially powerful on the last track of the album, The Song is You, which contains one of Charlaps most scintillating piano solo's and some great piano and guitar exchanges towards the end of this great standard. The coda is also particularly unusual, a final stroke of inventiveness that completes a wonderfully creative and rewarding CD by some of the best artists you will find anywhere. A true gift to the listener. ~ Peter King
