The first six titles were recorded in 1947 and feature a group lead by trumpeter Al Killian which was originally formed to back singer Billy Eckstine on the West Coast. When that engagement was over the band, minus Eckstine and with some personnel changes, went out on the road and stayed for about six months in Portland where these acetates were made. Wardell Gray is here on tenor and the bassist is the wonderfully named Shifty Henry. Would you employ a musician with a name like that?
The next track has singer Damita Jo recorded at a session at the Hula Hut in L.A. in 1950 and later issued by Prestige. This one track remained unissued because the singer is way off mike and the balance is poor. Criss kept a copy however and he has a blistering solo here.
'Strike Up The Band' comes from a session recorded at the Trade Winds Club in 1952 and has another fine solo from Sonny.
By 1965 Sonny was struggling to get work and used some of his cash reserves to make a demo disc which can be heard here (tracks 8-12) and it is perhaps the best performance on this record. The demo remained unissued and unused until Criss gave it to Don Schlitten (who had signed Sonny to a Prestige contact in 1966) some time in the late 1960s with the comment - 'You can probably use it in a memorial album some day'.
