This Sackville release has pianist Sir Charles Thompson's first recordings in six years and his most recent to date. 66 at the time, Thompson had been playing solo piano in small bars for years, so he sounds quite comfortable performing these 11 unaccompanied solos. Other than his famous "Robbins' Nest," two of his other originals and Bill Butler's "Portrait of a Piano," Thompson mostly sticks to swing standards. The results are generally quite relaxed and lightly swinging, with highlights including "Ain't Misbehavin'," "Happy Boogie" and a lyrical rendition of "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most."
