Исполнитель: Ken PeplowskiНазвание альбома: A Tribute To Benny Goodman Год выпуска: 1997, Progressive Records Формат файлов: Mp3, 320 Размер архива: 172 Mb Скачать с: rusfolder In the early '40s, clarinetist Benny Goodman used the pseudonym Shoeless John Jackson when recording semi-anonymously on a Mel Powell date (although no one was fooled as to his identity). For this Goodman tribute, clarinetist Ken Peplowski, pianist Johnny Varro, vibraphonist John Cocuzzi and drummer Joe Ascione formed the Shoeless John Jackson Quartet. Despite using the same instrumentation as the original Benny Goodman Quartet, this CD is not a set of re-creations. In fact, none of the 13 standards had been recorded by BG in the quartet format, although most had been cut by Goodman in other groups. Varro has always sounded pretty close to Teddy Wilson, but Peplowski is more distinctive, although with a Goodman influence; Cocuzzi is halfway between Lionel Hampton and Red Norvo, and Ascione looks as much toward Buddy Rich as to Gene Krupa. In any case, their swing music is enjoyable, with the highlights including "Nobody's Sweetheart," "What a Little Moonlight Can Do," "Bye Bye Blues" and "Jubilee." Easily recommended to swing collectors. Scott Yanow
