"She’d come to your house for a visit and start painting murals all over your walls," remembers Sheila. "She’d paint these wonderful scenes of the Village and name the cafes after you. My daughter was crazy about nuns so she painted some nuns. Sparkling, she was."
Sheila and Mark wrote the blues about Junior together and, with a great section-- pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Harvie Swartz, drummer Ben Riley--gathered songs according to the usual karma, as Sheila calls it. "Where You At?" becomes a duet of hipsters. Sheila sings the exquisite Vernon Duke and Ogden Nash ballad "Roundabout" with an "It All Goes Round" counterpoint from Mark. They echo each other on "Trust in Me" as if calling across a great distance. Charlie Parker is Sheila's muse. "Quasimodo" is Parker's variation of "Embraceable You" and they sing and scat some of both. "The Best Thing For You" comes from the Irving Berlin musical "Call Me Madame"--but Ethel Merman and George Sanders weren't quite so swinging. They end with songs of goodbye, but not really. One hopes they'll sing together again and more. Mark Murphy and Sheila Jordan are very much the real thing.
"We're both survivors of a long chorus in life," says Mark." We both teach singers and both tell them that you have to live it to learn it. We've lived this music." And as Mark said once, immodest but too right, "When we're gone you won't hear the likes of us again!" Notes by Michael Bourne, Host of Singers Unlimited, WBGO, Newark
