Spear, who was a trumpet player for Tommy Dorsey and Benny Goodman, in the big‐band era, went on to form his own group; which later became a regular feature on Mr. Gleason's television show. He was a bandleader for DuMont's Channel 5 in New York when Mr. Gleason brought his “Cavalcade of Stars” variety show to the station in the late nineteen‐forties. They worked together there and, in 1961, Mr. Gleason brought Mr. Spear to CBS to replace Ray Bloch.
When the comedian moved his show to Miami Beach in 1963, Mr. Spear followed. He returned frequently to New York, however, and often toured with his orchestra.
Mr. Spear kept his group together after the Gleason show went off the air in 1970 and recorded an album, “Live in Love,” the following year. The New York Times
