Tribute to Tenor Legends began as a series of concerts in 2019 in cooperation with Maciek Węglarz and the Harris Piano Jazz Bar in Krakow. This series is dedicated to the work of the most outstanding tenor saxophonists who have inspired many generations of musicians and listeners. Each concert was a chance to get acquainted with the music of these saxophone giants as well as an opportunity to listen to the excellent guests invited to perform.
After a few concerts in the series, thanks to Paweł Koźmiński, the idea arose to record an album summarizing the concerts so far and (as it turned out) going far beyond them. The album includes eight compositions by tenor saxophonists whose work and jazz style are closest to my heart. The album can be divided into two parts: the first four songs can be described more as mainstream, classical playing, and the next four are a journey into further corners of modal jazz, free jazz or free improvisation. Creating an album with the music of tenor saxophone legends is not an easy task. Our intention was to preserve the atmosphere of the individual artists’ creativity and to give the repertoire a new, fresh tone. Some songs are intentionally quite close to the original, while others are a bit more different.
