On his second solo album, Two of Us, which followed his first, Always You, by six months, Robert Goulet continued to sound like a new major artist of adult pop. Belatedly turned into a star by his breakout appearance in the 1960 Broadway musical Camelot, the 28-year-old Canadian transplant (actually, an all-American native of Lawrence, MA) with the big, manly baritone who sang "If Ever I Would Leave You" to Julie Andrews on-stage was, by mid-1962, in transition to becoming a nightclub entertainer. Two of Us presented him with some good material to use in that effort. Arranger/conductor Glenn Osser wisely played down the boom in Goulet's voice, using him instead in a well-chosen selection of romantic ballads and, even when turning to a rhythm tune like Johnny Mercer's "Something's Gotta Give" from the film Daddy Long Legs, having Goulet undersing the potentially aggressive lyric. That song was associated with Fred Astaire, who introduced it, as was Cole Porter's "All of You" from Silk Stockings (Astaire sang it in the more widely seen film although Don Ameche had introduced it on Broadway), and "But Beautiful" was a Bing Crosby standard. Goulet's voice and presentation were distinctive enough to allow him to hold his ground against such stylists, and when he got an overlooked number that hadn't already been sung by prominent predecessors, such as the title song or the lovely ballad "Where Do I Go from Here?" from the 1959 musical Fiorello!, he could be near-definitive. He also had no trouble with European imports like "Take Me in Your Arms" and especially "I Wish You Love (Que Reste-T-Il Nos Amours?)," and best of all was a neat discovery (probably of Osser's), a vocal version of Benny Goodman's closing theme, the Gordon Jenkins composition "Goodbye." The quality of Goulet's voice suggested a tendency toward bombast (it was this which made his other song from Camelot, the pompous "C'est Moi," so funny). Osser reined his singer in to excellent effect, giving him a second album to match his impressive debut.
