The quintet or «Blue» sides come from two dates that took piace on August 19th and 23rd (again at the Radio Recorders Studio) and were produced by Jimmy Hilliard. The sidemen were Buddy Collette, Tal Farlow, Red Callender and Chico Hamilton. Four wellknown standards were played with great subtlety and exquisite taste. Two Richard Rodgers' songs Blue Room and Blue Moon, open this side, the latter being played a la latin. These are followed by Serenade In Blue, a Harry Warren tune highlighting the clear and peaceful tone of Collette's flute. The end track finds all the boys swinging their way effortlessly through a 32-bar up-tempo version of Edgar Sampson' Blue Lou, complete with a tasteful walking bass solo by Callender.
The septet or «Rose» tracks, which were recorded at the Capitol Studio from 12 noon to 4:30 PM on September 17th and produced by one of the most active men on the jazz scene: Jack Lewis. Red is now on vibes and in the company of two members of the quintet, Farlow and Callender. Larry Bunker is on drums instead of Hamilton, while Collette is replaced by two members of Shorty Rogers' Giants, Shorty himself on trumpet and Jimmy Giuffre, his inseparable musical sidekick, on clarinet. Pianist Pete Jolly, who was then a recent addition to the Giants, joins the rhythm section.
There is a distinct «Giants» feeling about every tune recorded at this session and everybody gets a chance to prove himself a superb improviser. On Roses Of Picardy Red opens the soloing with one chorus of vi-bes; then Shorty, Giuffre, Farlow and Jolly take half a chorus apiece. Rose.Room, too, starts with Red's chorus, which is again followed by a half chorus each by Giuffre, Farlow, Shorty and Jolly. The next number, Blue Rose, composed by Shorty, is a beautiful medium blues with a happy feel, displaying his ever-present originai and strong melodic lines. Four choruses of vibes, followed by two each from trumpet, guitar, clarinet, bass and piano, take care of the solo section on this track. To cap it ali, we can enjoy a 1922 song, Rose of the Rio Grande, which began a long list of hit tunes written by Harry Warren. The group states the melody and Red gives it a finishing touch by soloing lightly over it. Once again Red leads off the solos with one full chorus followed by a half chorus each by Shorty, Giuffre, Farlow, Jolly and eight bars from Callender's walking bass.
