Drummer Paul Barbarin always led first-class New Orleans jazz bands. This CD features his 1951 septet (a group that included trumpeter Enrie Cagnolatti, clarinetist Albert Burbank and trombonist Eddie Pierson) on seven hot standards. The second half of this set moves up to 1954 and showcases a pickup group led by trumpeter Percy Humphrey that also features clarinetist Ray Burke, trombonist Joe Avery and pianist Sweet Emma Barrett. Although the latter group is a bit more erratic, their session is historic since several members of the band would later be with The Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
