It was a previous project, a tribute dedicated to the saxophonist Wayne Shorter, created two years before with several of the musicians that participate in the album, Johanes Radianto and Owen Hart Jr, which served as an impetus to Valverde for the recording of this album, in which also featured one of the most significant pianists in the world of jazz, David Berkman, and bassist Mattia Magatelli.
The album is produced entirely by the saxophonist, well directed and very elaborate, perhaps because it is his first record as a composer, besides being recorded with an exquisite sound and mixed with a careful lace, thanks to the wisdom of an expert Chris Weeda (sound technician of Totts Thielemans). The musical work focuses on tenor saxophone and soprano, but leaves much of that role and large spaces of improvisation to the rest of the instruments. The artist expresses his musical experiences with elegant and decisive ways, telling us a story through seven pieces chosen with an accurate disposition, shuffling different group formats, quartet and quintet, where the soloists alternate the different improvisation solos of each theme, never in the same order.
As a presentation, the album begins with "Black Nile", a piece of hard bop style, in which the quintet is developed masterfully, with a compact interaction between the five components, unleashing a substantial and enveloping groove from the Start. Excellent the work of the rhythm section.
"My First Visit", is a smooth composition of the guitarist Johanes Radianto, a three by four with a certain bluesy character on the guitar, a quartet, impeccably wrapped by the bassist Mattia Magatelli, ductile and suggestive, and by the drummer Owen Hart Jr, exhaustive and forceful in his dialogues.
The unconventional rhythms come back with the theme "Beatrice" by Sam Rivers. A dynamic piece that acquires intensity according to the diligent solos of saxophone and guitar, and an overwhelming presence of the double bass and the drums.
The ballad "Infant Eyes", by Wayne Shorter, is a moving score that exudes exquisiteness as a whole, highlighting the improvisations of saxophone and double bass.
The quintet closes the album with two compositions by Valverde: "When The Smoke Came Out", a six by four, with a ostinato of contrabass that hints at the bulerías stick. And "Habibi", a beautiful bolero adorned by the suggestive arrangements and improvisations of Berkman and Valverde.
Tireless and laborious task of this saxophonist, composer and educator, Patxi Valverde, to which we can only predict a deserved success and a great future in this magical world of jazz. The noble essence, good taste and know-how are already part of it. Congratulations to all the components and thank you for delighting us with this excellent work.
