Patty Peterson-on the release of “The Very Thought Of You”

WHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING

“Patty can (and did) energize a room with her high-spirited, big-voiced, take-no-prisoners command of the American Songbook”
-Don Heckman, LA Times

"Once a musical chameleon, she proves her jazz bona fides on her fifth, best and most sophisticated album...She can cover anything from Chaka Khan to Cole Porter with equal authority, exhibiting star quality and drive!”
-Jon Bream, Star Tribune

“She stretches her voice to accommodate wrenching emotions and brings it all off with class."
-Jazz Times

“I like her forthright sexiness and spunk.”
-Downbeat

Releasing this CD is a dream come true. 7 years ago, I began this project with my brother, Billy Peterson, at the helm. He had produced my first CD, “The More I See You”, and it was such a great experience, we decided to collaborate again. I called David Hazeltine and he flew in to perform the Artists Quarter in St Paul, and record with me. Billy envisioned taking Jazz Standards and giving them a different kind of “groove”, giving them a whole new sound. To do that, we invited Stokley Williams, singer with a popular R & B group Mint Condition, to join the trio, but this time on drums. The 2 days of recording sessions produced 9 songs. 8 of them are on this new CD.
During that following year, we put on the first of the special guests. Bobby Lyle was in the Twin Cities performing, so he came by the studio and put the solo on 2 of the songs: "The Shadow Of Your Smile" and "Save Your Love For Me".
Billy invited Jim Rotondi to play trumpet on “Angel Eyes”, and Ternor sax man, Jerry Bergonzi, to play on “Save Your Love For Me” and “Something”.
Sheila E. is a long time friend, and when we decided to add percussion, she was the natural choice for me. She agreed and her trademark sound is on many of the songs.
One year after this incredible start to my new CD, I was driving home from a recording session and felt a burst in my chest. I wasn’t sure if I was having a heart attack or not, so I pulled over and called 911. I had been experiencing some heart issues and was aware that I would need a new aortic valve at some point in the future. An ambulance took me to the hospital, and there, my doctor diagnosed me with something I had never heard of before: Aortic Dissection. I was slowly dying and the medical staff had to move fast.
There was no guarantee that I would survive the impending surgery. My family started to gather, and as I went thought those double doors, I was singing to them all, thinking that the medical staff would “fix me and I would be right back”. This was the thought I held in my heart as they began. At the time, I had no idea that only a small percentage of people survive Aortic Dissection.
Well, I did survive, and came out of it with a new mechanical valve and a partial mesh aorta. Then, the dramatic recovery began.
I have always been known as a powerful singer. After open heart surgery, I had to take 3 breaths to complete one sentence. I didn’t know if I would ever be able to sing again. Not until I began cardiac rehab did I begin to breath deeply again. It was painful, and it took me months to get back into singing game.
I performed at a “come back concert” 6 months later, and then, re-entered my active life as a mother, family person, friend and singer, but slowly.
My other brothers, Ricky and Paul, put their definitive touches on the CD in addition to my nephew, Jason, and because of people’s busy schedules, it waited to be finished.
Tony Axtell knew how much I longed to complete this CD. He knew that finishing it and releasing it would be the beginning of the next chapter of my life. He asked to work on it and after a while, I handed him the tracks. He mixed, re-EQ’d it, put on some of the musical facets that were missing, and mastered it, almost a year later.
Tony held in his hands my dreams of a completed CD. He wove together the sounds that many people contributed to that eventually became this new CD, “The Very Thought Of You”.
This completed CD a milestone for me. It is a dream come true. It is life after almost no life. It is love and music at the highest level. It is my heart.
