Living in Krefeld pianist Olaf Polziehn, born in 1970, is one of the most versatile and most popular pianists of the German scene. In 1992, he began his musical studies at the Cologne Music Academy with Frank Chastenier and John Taylor. As early as 1992 he founded with Ingmar Heller (b) and Oliver Mewes (dr) the Olaf Polziehn Trio (first CD in 2000: "Olaf Polziehn Trio - American Songbook" SDP 1032-1). In 2002 he released "American Songbook Vol.2" with the New York saxophonist Harry Allen as guest soloist (SDP 1046-1).
Well located on Satin Doll Productions, the third disc of this extraordinary trio front - this time a live CD, recorded in Jazztone in Loerrach. As a guest of the Gentleman tenor saxophonist - Scott Hamilton. The Who's Who of Jazz calls him bluntly to "mainstream Messiah". Easily he draws on the vocabulary of Lester Young, Ben Webster or Don Byas. The American jazz critic Whitney Balliett comments on Hamilton thrilled: "It's like Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster and Lester Young were returned to a person!". Here Scott Hamilton has certainly found his own voice, which is characterized by elegance, a relaxing, imaginative swing and great improvisation skills. Scott Hamilton is now one of the most successful tenor saxophonist and is undoubtedly one of the greatest saxophonists of our time. He has played with the likes of Teddy Wilson, Dave McKenna, Mel Lewis, Zoot Sims, Ray Brown, Gene Harris, Clark Terry and many more.
Olaf Polziehn itself moves stylistically between swinging and modern mainstream. The Jazz Editor of SWR, Woomy Schmidt, wrote of him: "(...) Extremely inspired German pianist Olaf Polziehn making its way toward a world leader is undeterred." As a sideman he played concerts and CD productions in Europe and the USA among others UVA with Bobby Durham, Martin Drew, Jeff Hamilton, Harry Allen, Howard Alden, Rolf Kühn.
