Max Roach's final recording with his all-percussion group M'Boom is a live set recorded at the long defunct S.O.B.'s in New York City. Utilizing a vast array of instruments, including vibes, marimba, xylophone, conga, and timpani, among others, Roach and his band offer engaging interpretations of originals written by bandmembers, and standards along with jazz compositions by others and at least one surprise, while the personnel often varies greatly from one track to the next, ranging from solo to octet. Janet Jackson's "Come Back to Me" hardly seems like a plausible jazz vehicle, but with Roach sitting out and Joe Chambers' marimba solo, it takes on a Latin flavor and manages to swing. "Body and Soul" is unusual as a humorous duet for Chambers' vibes and Roy Brooks on musical saw. The in-your-face take of Thelonious Monk's "Epistrophy" and campy "Blue Monk" (with Warren Smith playing the melody on timpani) are obvious highlights, but the compositions by the bandmembers also merit high praise. It is unfortunate that this fascinating band was not documented more extensively, but this recording is full of surprises for anyone willing to explore it.

A legend… Max Roach, for my money, never disappoints: He's that fully actualized, educated man, a graceful man of great poise, and always in possession of the goods required for any percussive task. This uniquely Afro-American jazz percussion group (Max was a founding member in 1970) was fortunately captured live in performance at S.O.B's in NYC on Jan. 9th, 1992, and it presents an amazing diversity of percussion instruments in various combinations and roles - some memorably so.The absolute conviction in this work is audibly palpable and is ever present here. In his multiple, overlapping roles as leader, producer, ensemble performer, soloist, composer and arranger, he never makes his contributions to the musical moment about him, but seems to channel and facilitate the group's collective power. Here M'Boom, at its core, is comprised of seven, principal percussion masters who perform in piece-specific subgroups, and these may be variably augmented by contributions from one or more of four, young apprentice-level performers. The program of 14 pieces ranging in length from 1:17 to 8:30 offers mostly original works, each usually arranged by its member-composer, but notably includes two modern jazz standards by Thelonious, "Epistrophy" and "Blue Monk", as well as "Body and Soul" from the American standard's songbook. Warren Smith's use of the tympani as a melodic voice on the Monk tunes is a real treat, as is Roy Brooks' musical saw on the head of "Body and Soul." The event is cleanly recorded and the audience in the room is appropriately attentive, receptive, and appreciative. Overall, the recording benefits from a relative absence of the extraneous room noise too often encountered in such venues. On the band with Max, Warren and Roy were core members: Joe Chambers, Omar Clay, Fred King, and Ray Mantilla. Apprentice echelon players were: Eli Fountain, Steve Berrios, Francisco Mora, and Craig McIver. Whether you are a student of rhythm moved by all things percussive, or simply appreciate the creative act, this record will not only get your feet tappin', but will surely stand up to repeated listening. Wish I could've been there! You will, too!!
