In 1978, McPartland began hosting the much-honored National Public Radio series, Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz, which featured her in conversation and performance with a wide variety of musical guests – from Eubie Blake to Dizzy Gillespie to Rosemary Clooney, from Elvis Costello to Steely Dan to Norah Jones. The show was heard on more than 200 radio stations all over the world, making it one of the most popular jazz shows ever on the radio. Piano Jazz received a Peabody Award in 1983. McPartland recorded her last show in September 2010, although she did not officially step down as host until November 2011. Piano Jazz has since continued with reruns and guest hosts.

Her many accolades include the Kennedy Center's Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Award, Yale University's Duke Ellington Fellowship Award, the National Music Council's American Eagle Award, a lifetime achievement Grammy Award and being named an American Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts. In 2004, McPartland was inducted into the ASCAP Jazz Wall of Fame. She was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2007 and named a member of the Order of the British Empire in 2010.
