I remember Karl Olandersson from 2002 when he was part of Ronnie Gardiner's septet that played at Gröna Lund, later I heard his trumpet playing with Hacke Björksten's quintet at Norrköpingsklubben Crescendo. And as an unannounced soloist, he is on Erik Söderlind's debut album Twist for Jimmy Smith. In addition to this, Karl Olandersson has been involved in countless other contexts. Fun to hear more from him and his quartet.
Jerome Richardson's The groove merchant, composed for Thad Jones / Mel Lewis's big band in the late 60's, is an introduction called duga. What a tone and phrasing.
A more typical so-called standard melody is East of the sun and west of the moon. Just like on Anders Bergcrantz 'CD, Olandersson has brought Cochise where he got an outlet for his fine technology. Tasteful interpretations are provided by the quartet in You don´t know what love is with inspired piano solo by Daniel Tilling, Just friends on duo with bassist Martin Sjöstedt and a wonderful version of It might as well be spring.
Fun idea with wa-wa-coordinated trumpet in In a mellow tone. Swing in a nice mix with today's hardbop. A new name for me is Mattias Puttonen whose drum accompaniment has qualities that are only positive.
