There’s always a danger that when an artist you revered in the Sixties makes a comeback the result is going to be disappointing or disheartening. The power may have faded and the star quality waned over the years. Happily, with José Feliciano, now a vigorous 72, that’s not the case. There may be a deeper timbre to the voice, but it still has that rich volume and breathtaking potency, allied to guitar skills which have matured rather than lessened over the decades. Backed by the ever reliable Jools Holland, the Puerto Rican-born star revisits some of his past glories, including a fresh reading of the yuletide favourite Feliz Navidad done in ska-style and “Let’s Find Each Other Tonight” from his 1983 Motown album Romance in the Night. Elsewhere he gives his own personal interpretation of the great Leadbelly classic “Midnight Special” and the Ray Charles warhorse “Hit the Road, Jack” where Ruby Turner adds some full-blooded vocal support. Equally entertaining is the Django Reinhardt-influenced take on the standard “Honeysuckle Rose”, while the confessional “As You See Me Now”, the Jools Holland-penned title track, fully exploits Feliciano’s still magical vocal skills (and Holland’s keyboard talents) in a rolling, mid-tempo, big-band number. Fans of the star from way back and those who just want to know what all the fuss is about won’t be disappointed.
