While not nearly as well known as his contemporaries Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton, New Orleans-bred clarinetist Johnny Dodds was as influential on his instrument as Armstrong was on the trumpet. Dodds had a rough-and-ready, blues-drenched tone and a distinctive vibrato.
Even the so-called King of Swing himself, Benny Goodman, admitted that he was inspired by Dodds's playing. BLUES CLARINET presents a fine cross-section of Dodds's peak years--his New Orleans and Chicago hot jazz recordings, leading his own groups and with Armstrong, featuring
plenty of collective playing and sizzling soloing.
