Verve shone its Spotlight on Jacy Parker far too briefly - the album is the lone date the singer and pianist recorded for the label and it's lovely, introducing a bold, lively stylist with considerable promise. Paired with trumpeter Ernie Royal, bassist Don Cinderella, and drummers Roy James or Sticks Evans, Parker tackles material like "Here Comes Trouble Again," "Guess Who I Saw Today," and "You're the Cream in My Coffee" with an uncompromisingly modern attitude. Her wry, sassy vocals and forward-thinking piano solos are in stark contrast to the prevailing girl singer sensibilities of the time. A refreshing but ultimately bittersweet listening experience, if only because it promises even better music still to come.
