"There was a time when fellow alto saxophonists Greg Osby and Steve Coleman were not too far apart for hard-nosed devotion to creating the unprecedented, but Osby has grown more accessibly pragmatic over recent years - his last album, St Louis Shoes, was a visit to the golden ages, reworking proto-jazz, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk, and including a version of Summertime with trumpeter Nicholas Payton.
Payton once again partners Osby on this live set from New York's Jazz Standard in January, and Summertime and Parker and Gillespie's Shaw Nuff are again on the programme, as well as Lover Man, Bernie's Tune, and three Osby originals. Bernie's Tune is a flying contrapuntal bopper, though the more enigmatic Osby reappears on the Equalatogram before it relaxes into laid-back lyricism. Shaw Nuff starts as a string of sax/trumpet exclamation marks before breaking into a sprint. Joan Osborne's vocals don't shed undue light on Lover Man, and St Louis Shoes remains the better album. But the leader's alto solos, built on his imposing stock of uncliched motifs, are always models of how to sidestep the usual punchlines. " by John Fordham скачать
