Not all musicians release their first album in their early twenties and fresh out of studies at the conservatory. There are those who arrive at their recording debut after years of apprenticeship and sacrifices, which have earned them the esteem of their colleagues. This is the case of the Venetian saxophonist Giovanni Masiero, who finally recorded his first album as a leader at the age of 42. He completed classical and therefore jazz studies in the conservatories of Venice and Castelfranco, and then carried out a fruitful job as a sideman especially in large ensembles (Jazz Orchestra of the Veneto, but also with Maurizio Giammarco and Tommaso Cappellato), where he also played the baritone by necessity . Masiero also nurtures an ancient and genuine passion for boxing, as the title of the album clearly suggests, dedicated to a boxer of the 80s, Marvin Hagler. "Round 6" finds its most intense and significant moment precisely in the song that gives it its title, thanks to the glowing drums of Marco Carlesso but also to the obstinate riffs of Dario Zennaro's guitar and Nicola Dal Bo's organ. The quartet has five years of activity behind it and openly refers to the sounds of the Organ Trio brought into vogue by Jimmy Smith, but at the same time manages to break away from it, playing a sincere and visceral post-bop, full of groove and blues (Rusty Saxophone). Whether boppistic harmonies are reinterpreted (Frank's Bike) or the hypnotic and dreamy atmospheres of Soundgarden (Black Hole Sun) are revisited, Masiero's work is appreciated for its coherence and homogeneity, to which the solid trumpet of Francesco also gives a partial but precious contribution. Minutello (as hard-bop from the '60s in Blue Note on My Mind, and also in this case the title is more than programmatic) and the warm voice of Francesca Bertazzo Hart in the caressing bossa of Maybe the Last Time. Finally, the compositional contributions provided by Dal Bo with My Delight and Zennaro with U.K., a piece suspended between Scofield and Hendrix, should be underlined. “Round 6” finally confirms, if ever it were needed, the never dormant vitality of Venetian jazz.
