Particularly successful title for the new work of the trio of saxophonist Gianluca Lusi. "Voyage".
One almost has the "tactile" impression of following with the eyes a maze of roads, different from each other, and, at the same time, closely linked to modern "Mediterranean" jazz, which has long been the subject of Lusi's research.
There is a strong temptation to let oneself be literally "guided" by a sonority capable of being affected, at the same time, by the cleanliness of the Garbarekian sounds (as in "Bluesette", or in "Viaggio") and by the flexible creativity in the phrasing of a clear Shorterian matrix, in a delicate fusion that is a constant search for a difficult but possible balance.
Of "classical" training, with important collaborations to his credit Gianluca Lusi, in the third recording project under his own name, he chooses to give voice to a repertoire of the most varied standards (ranging from "Over the rainbow" by Arold Harlen to " Witchcraft "by Cy Coleman, passing through" Phace Dance "by Pat Metheny," I love you "by Cole Porter and" Bluesette "by Toots Thielemans), interspersed with three original compositions by the excellent vibraphonist Marco Pacassoni (" Final proget ", "Dancing", "Travel").
And it is precisely in the latter that the trio best expresses its qualities: the title track "Viaggio" (in my opinion the most interesting piece of the cd together, for different aspects, to the version of "Bluesette") brings with it, inexorably, echoes of distant countries.
Here the two melodic lines, skilfully woven by sax and vibraphone, intertwine, merge, chase and separate, creating a sound that could easily be defined as "Mediterranean-European", at the same time modern and almost archaic, ancestral.
One can imagine a train that, gently and slowly, crosses Europe (from the Scandinavian peninsula, to the Soviet steppes, passing through the scents of the southern seas), almost attracting, as it passes, "musical molecules", sounds, colors, to then mix them in a melody that is both melancholy and soothing.
The blend is skilful: the refined refinement of the sound by Gianluca Lusi, the fine "Latin" phrasing by Marco Pacassoni and the precise stylistic cleanliness of the double bass by Giacomo Dominici (the latter struggling with solos as important as they are successful in "Bluesette" , "Final Proget" and "Witchcraft") do the rest.
One last mention deserves the almost "dreamlike" intro of "Over the rainbow", with a vibraphone sound that probably would have deserved much more space.
