Another collector's item for jazz vocal fans from SSJ records! Flo Handy (1931-96) was a sister of singer Ella Mae Morse and the wife of tenor saxophonist and arranger Al Cohn, and a formidable singer and pianist. She played and sang at various clubs in New York, but never became a household name.
This, the only album under Handy's own name, was recorded through the initiative of the veteran guitar duo, George Barnes and Carl Kress. For their second album, they were looking for a singer, and Flo Handy was introduced to them by Zoot Sims.
As this CD demonstrates, Handy was a very good singer who has both great control of her voice and an ability to effectively interpret and express the lyrics. The supremely tasteful guitar duo of Barnes and Kress provides impeccable support. This is a very nice vocal album, indeed, and the sound quality is surprisingly good as well.
