Italian master pianist Enrico Pieranunzi has made more than fifty recordings so far in a career that stretches back to the 1970s and has taken in collaborations with such major figures as Chet Baker, Charlie Haden, Paul Motian and Jim Hall. Few of his recordings, many of them now on CAM JAZZ, has such presence as The Extra Something, a live recording made at the celebrated Village Vanguard club in New York City. Working with a crack band, Pieranunzi combines core jazz values with a sense of structure and order that comes from classical music, but all of it pervaded by a strong sense of freedom. The Extra Something is not just another release by a prolific artist. It marks a definite stage in his remarkable unfolding career, and with it, elevates Pieranunzi to the ranks of the jazz greats. --Brian Morton
"The Extra Something - Live at the Village Vanguard" by Enrico Pieranunzi -- the third album recorded in the legendary Manhattan club after "Live At The Village Vanguard" (2013) and "New Spring" (2016) -- was released on May 20, 2022 by Cam Jazz. The album is the result of the lice recordings made during the 2016 concerts leading a quintet composed of Diego Urcola (trumpet and trombone), Seamus Blake (tenor sax), Ben Street (double bass) and Adam Cruz (drums).
After the first personal invitation received by Lorraine Gordon, the pianist has played 8 times in the historic venue where fundamental chapters in the history of jazz have taken place. Pieranunzi is the first and only Italian musician and one of only 3 Europeans together with French pianists Martial Solal and Michel Petrucciani to have performed as a leader and to have recorded live gigs at the Village Vanguard.
And it is precisely to the memory of Lorraine Gordon, who passed away in 2018, that this album is dedicated.
Pieranunzi remembers it like this: "A few days after setting foot in the club whose name I had read so many times on fantastic albums that I never got tired of listening, he said to me:" I had listened to something of yours on the radio, and I liked it, so I asked Paul Motian to look for you and bring you to play here. " This may sound normal, but it isn't. For a European and Italian musician, playing as a leader in the temple of jazz, with fantastic American musicians, is something extraordinary.
