This is the fact: the swing was during a period of time the most popular music, the most listened to and danced by the public. However, today it has been practically forgotten in the drawers of oblivion and it is rare to hear it even on specialized radio programs. Jazz has undergone so many changes, evolutions and swings throughout its history that almost nobody remembers those distant successes.
That is why it is especially joyful that there are currently musicians like Enric Peidro, willing to rescue that funny and musically attractive spirit of the swing era. Because the work of Enric and his musicians is not made from a vision that we could call "archaeological", but from a completely current conception, although, yes, alien to fashions and trends, assimilating all the subsequent musical baggage and updating , from a festive look, that music so rich and so pleasant to listen to.
His last recording in front of a powerful group baptized as "swingtet", shows everything we are saying and, in this sense, the title of the album can not be more significant: Happiness is a thing called ... JAZZ.
The first thing that jumps to the ear when putting the disc in the player is that the group sounds like a perfect gear, a well assembled machine where each of its members finds perfect support in the rest of the musicians and, in turn, is left glimpse a total rapport between them to achieve sound as a homogeneous whole, without neglecting the brilliance of the individualities.
And among the individuals stands out, without a doubt, an Enric Peidro every day more solid and more secure of its possibilities, as it is evident in some solos as elegant as impeccable. At his side, that great pianist of difficult surname, who is Richard Busakiewicz, once again demonstrates his mastery, both in the solos and as part of the rhythm section. Next to them is the trumpet by Sergio García-Aleix (brilliant on "I'd Be There" and "T'aint me"), the trombone by Voro Hernández (an excellent emulation of Juan Tizol on "Moonlight Fiesta"), Óscar Cuchillo and Simone Zaniol on bass and drums respectively, and collaboration on half of Kike Guzman's alto sax themes, end up composing a very high level instrumental ensemble.
The repertoire is made up of classics, generally not very well known, by authors as important as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Don Byas (truly delicious that "Living my life", my favorite subject with "Walkin 'home" by Arnett Cobb who closes the album), Lester Young or Johnny Hodges, among others.
This is a lesson in swing or classic jazz, as you prefer, where, as often happens in important works, the complex arises so naturally and freshly that it seems simple. A disc to enjoy, lift your spirits and spend it so much spinning in the player.
