Review by Ken Dryden This Danish LP compiles four different organ-based studio sessions made by tenor saxophonist Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis during the mid-'50s for King. Due to the brevity of the tracks, it's likely that these songs were primarily intended for jukeboxes. Side one contains almost all of a 1958 quartet session with Shirley Scott (with whom Davis worked on numerous occasions), bassist Bill Pemberton, and drummer Arthur Edgehill, inexplicably omitting "Out of Nowhere." Davis' big-toned tenor sax is complemented by Scott's understated comping as they swing through a mixture of standards and newer show tunes that would become standards. One other track ("The Happy Whistler") featuring Scott comes from their first studio date together, recorded in 1956. Organist Doc Bagby and drummer Charlie Rice join Davis for the other selections, which come from two 1955 sessions. Although these two sidemen never achieved the widespread fame of either Davis or Scott, they provide strong support for the leader, especially in a spirited rendition of Cole Porter's "Night and Day." Although some of this music has been reissued on a variety of labels since its initial release by King, little if any of it has appeared on CD.
