Исполнитель: The Don Ellis Orchestra Название альбома: Electric Bath Год выпуска: 1967 Формат файлов: mp3@320 kbps Размер архива: 97.43 MB + 8.32 MB (singles) Скачать с: Easy-Share Review: For his first studio recording with his colorful big band, Don Ellis utilized five trumpets, three trombones, five reeds, Mike Lang on keyboards, three bassists, drummer Steve Bohannon, and three percussionists to perform some remarkable new music. The most memorable selection is "Indian Lady" (accurately described as a "hoedown in 5/4"), which with its false endings is often quite humorous. The other four originals (the trumpeter-leader's feature on "Alone," "Turkish Bath," "Open Beauty," and the 17/4 "New Horizons"), while lesser-known, are also quite spirited. For the first time Ellis opened his band to the influence of rock (making liberal use of electronics) and the results lend themselves to some hilarity. ~ by Scott Yanow (AMG)
Before fusion really took off post-BITCHES BREW, there was all manner of jazz-rock experimentation. Trumpeter Don Ellis was an experimenter way before rock music was even an issue for jazz musicians. In fact, with his interest in quarter-tones and other such technical concerns, he risked being a marginal figure in the '50s. Luckily for him, he discovered a way to make the West Coast cool jazz progressive ethos work for him and his innovative big band in the '60s, never more so than on ELECTRIC BATH, an unexpected hit. (Columbia even reduced two jazz 45 single versions of "Indian Lady" and "Turkish Bath" for radio play) The whole concept stands up well today, a winning combination of a post-Kenton white man's big band and exotic dissonant textures.
