Years before John Coltrane burst on the scene, Don Byas was the last word in tenor saxohone virtuosity, and some of the harmonic devices that contemporary listeners attribute to Trane had been part of Byas' arsenal for decades. SAVOY JAM PARTY should prove a revelation to modern listeners. Byas favors a huge, masculine tenor sound, burnished in rich sentimental plumage, and his rhythmic approach is clearly aligned with the swing era, but his tone, time, timbre, articulation and melodic rapture are timeless. Recently a young virtuoso reedman, James Carter, uncovered Byas' "Worried And Blue" and "1944 Stomp," and it's easy to see why. On the former, Byas' sweet, buttery tone is warm and reassuring, full of nuance, and his cloud-like arpeggios seem to melt into water colors over Clyde Hart's turquoise-hued celeste. On the latter, he achieves the maximum in swing propulsion with a minimum of toil. Those listeners most captivated by the rites of swing will love SAVOY JAM PARTY. Listen to Byas tear through his unisons with trumpeter Charlie Shavers on the opening "Riffin' And Jivin'" and "Don's Idea," swing out on the rifforama of "Byas'd Opinion" and the title tune, or cut through the aforementioned "Cherokee" like a hot knife through butter. Yet for all his technique, there's a real sense of fun to these performances, such as the Latin hotcha which introduces the bluesy shout choruses of "Byas A Drink" (a cousin to "Stompin' At The Savoy") and "St. Louis Blues" (featuring a very young Max Roach).
