Lyrical, hard-grooving contemporary jazz with African, twisted funk and classical influences - the follow up to 2014's acclaimed album 'One Drop Love Chant’, led by melodic, harmonically adventurous saxophonist and composer Dom Franks and featuring internationally acclaimed pianist John Law (Gwilym Simcock, Evan Parker, Asaf Sirkis etc.).

‘A set full of melody and groove with gorgeous originals by saxophonist and composer Dom Franks’ - Swindon Jazz Review, June 2017
'The hippest version of the tune I've ever heard – it's great' - Tony Hymas (keyboardist with Jeff Beck, Jack Bruce, Tony Coe and composer of 'Mr. Men' on StrayHorn's arrangement)

StrayHorn quartet was formed in 2010 to showcase the original compositions of Cheltenham-based saxophonist Dom Franks, a former student of Jazz Messenger Jean Toussaint, and winner of the Daily Telegraph Young Jazz Musician competition. The band has honed its sound over three albums for Soulito Records and through a busy touring schedule into a lean, but lyrical take on contemporary jazz. The band includes rising young drum star Billy Weir (recent winner of the Tony Levin drummer award), James Agg (UK / US bassist with John Law's Recreations, Tonight Show guitarist Mike Powers) and pianist Alex Steele (Tina May, Julian Siegel, Jean Toussaint, Damon Brown). Jazz-FM award-winning guitarist Lee Jones guests on three tracks.

On its third album, 'Living With Spooks', Cheltenham-based StrayHorn Quartet nods to the developing surveillance society represented by Cheltenham's GCHQ, asking questions about identity and the limits of privacy. Composer and bandleader Dom Franks also forges a fresh collaboration with pianist John Law (Gwilym Simcock, Andy Sheppard, Jason Rebello, Tim Garland and Evan Parker). Law, who has been a star of the UK and European free jazz scene for over 30 years, brings a virtuosic contrapuntal and finely honed melodic touch to the band's already hard-driving contemporary sound.

Dom Franks, as well as contributing several originals to the album, chose to arrange material specifically with Law's style in mind, including the Welsh folk melody Rhosymedre, and even Tony Hymas's original Mr. Men theme tune, which is developed into a richly elegant jazz waltz. Elsewhere the group continues to explore influences including the groove-based contemporary sound of Ben Wendell of Kneebone and Taylor Eigsti, Joshua Redman’s soulful immediacy, Parisian salsa and afrobeat, along with a strong dose of European lyricism that makes StrayHorn’s sound credible but widely accessible.

StrayHorn Quartet’s previous album, 'One Drop Love Chant' (2014) was favourably reviewed by Jazzwise Magazine and picked up regular airplay on Alyn Shipton's show on BBC Radio 3, as well as reaching the playlists of jazz stations in the UK, France, Israel and Italy. The group toured widely in 2014 - 16 playing at The Bebop Club and Future Inns Bristol, Stratford Jazz Club, The Yardbird Birmingham, Cheltenham Jazz Festival and many more.

‘The outstanding individual musicianship of this quartet is breath-taking, but it is as a unit that the tightness of their grooves is most impressive. StrayHorn is at one moment exuberant, dynamic and explosive; the next relaxed, seductive and contemplative.’ Beyond Eternity review

'Dom Franks showcased his Strayhorn Quartet at the Malvern Jazz Weekend, and immediately showed why this band are so highly rated among the jazz fraternity, with consistently challenging improvisation, complete band empathy, and blended with accessible grooves. We shall definitely be asking them back!' - Rob Miller, Malvern Jazz Festival Promoter 2014
