THE CALLING won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album. This is a Hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. Sometimes criticized for her detours into pop and R&B, Dianne Reeves proves on THE CALLING that she is a top-notch jazz vocalist. Like the late Sarah Vaughan, to whom she pays tribute here, Reeves probes the music, never limiting herself to one specific style. Surrounded by L.A. 's finest, including pianists Billy Childs and Mulgrew Miller, Steve Wilson (soprano and alto sax), and others, Reeves delivers inspired performances throughout THE CALLING. The lush feel of the album is made complete by the smart orchestral arrangements of Childs and Robert Freedman. Highlights include a playful vocal duet between the legendary trumpeter-singer Clark Terry and Reeves on "I hadn't Anyone 'Til You," and a re-harmonized, hard- swinging version of "Lullaby of Birdland." A funky rendition of "Fascinating Rhythm" features a burning solo by Childs. All in all, THE CALLING is an inventive and reverential effort that spotlights the angelic quality of Reeves' voice and the creative arrangements of Childs.
