David Hazeltine is a veteran jazz pianist who seems to be one of the best kept secrets in jazz. This 1995 studio session for Sharp Nine adds seasoned trombonist Slide Hampton to complement a tight trio rounded out by the heavily in-demand bassist ... Full DescriptionPeter Washington, and drummer Killer Ray Appleton. This post-bop date kicks off with an angular approach to the timeless ballad "I Should Care," in which Hampton slips in several licks from "Four" (which was allegedly written by Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson and stolen by Miles Davis). Many listeners' eyes and ears would glaze over at the prospect of sitting through a jazz arrangement of the lightweight pop tune "Betcha By Golly Wow," but the creative scoring by Hazeltine and Gerald Cannon make this brisk treatment work beautifully. Appleton's hot drumming propels the hot version of "You Stepped Out of a Dream." The quartet doesn't neglect ballads, delivering a mellow interpretation of Cole Porter's "Every Time We Say Goodbye." Neither is Hazeltine a slouch as a composer. His lovely waltz, "Ann's Mood," (which the trombonist sits out), the infectious Latin-flavored "Pentimento," and the catchy "Four Flights Up" are all excellent vehicles for improvisation. ~ Ken Dryden, AMG

David Hazeltine - A World For Her (1998)
Pianist David Hazeltine is the leader of this straight-ahead quartet date, contributes two originals, and is in superior form, but tenor saxophonist Javon Jackson often steals the show. Jackson, who in other settings sometimes hints strongly at Joe Henderson, on this occasion looks more toward late-'50s John Coltrane, particularly on a beautifully interpreted version of "Soul Eyes" and Trane's "Moment's Notice." Other highlights include an extended "My Foolish Heart," Hazeltine's rightfully boppish "This One's for Bud," and "What'll I Do." Hazeltine and Jackson are joined by bassist Peter Washington and either Louis Hayes or Joe Farnsworth on drums, with vibraphonist Steve Nelson making a guest appearance on "Old Devil Moon." The music is quite enjoyable and very well played, one of Javon Jackson's finest recordings and a superior outing for David Hazeltine. ~ Scott Yanow

David Hazeltine - Blues Quarters vol.1 (2000)
David Hazeltine's third Criss Cross release features him in the company of tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, bassist Dwayne Burno, and drummer Joe Farnsworth. The pianist contributes three originals, two of which, "Naccara" and "A Touch of Green," share a similarly spacious, hard bop-oriented harmonic layout. The third, "Blues Quarters," is a 16-bar minor blues. Its form can be divided into quarters (hence the title), a fact that becomes especially interesting during the "trading fours" rounds with the drummer. On this tune and on Charlie Parker's "Cheryl," Alexander's and Hazeltine's mastery of the bop-blues idiom is astonishing. The lightning-quick closing track, "What Are You Doing?," also highlights Alexander's talent as a writer. Of the standards on the record, the bright Latin rendition of "Cry Me a River" is novel, but "Milestones" and "Spring Is Here" don't really rise above the ordinary. On the whole, however, this is a strong offering from one of the most consistent straight-ahead pianists on the jazz scene. ~ David R. Adler

Joe Locke, David Hazeltine 4et - Mutual Admiration Society Vol.2 (2009)
The incredible chemistry between vibraphonist Joe Locke and pianist David Hazeltine during their earlier Sharp Nine CD, Mutual Admiration Society, obviously inspired a follow-up record date, though it took a decade for producer Marc Edelman to make it happen, with bassist Essiet Essiet and drummer Billy Drummond returning as well. Both Locke and Hazeltine are superb soloists and sensitive accompanists for one another, while Essiet and Drummond prove why they are both among the first-call players for all kinds of dates. Locke's joyful, driving post-bop vehicle "Pharoah Joy" is a delightful opener that salutes Pharoah Sanders. Hazeltine's engaging "One for Reedy Ree" honors the late Tony Reedus (an in-demand drummer who died far too young), a gliding hard bop chart that Reedus would have enjoyed playing. A third tribute, Hazeltine's "Blues for Buddy," salutes the late pianist/vibraphonist Buddy Montgomery, who died just over a month prior to the CD's official release. Also noteworthy is Hazeltine's thoughtful adaptation of Stevie Wonder's "If It's Magic." A third volume is clearly in order to follow up this rewarding session. ~ Ken Dryden
