Hildinger studied at the University of Michigan until 1951. During his military service, he led the 8th Army Dance Band in the Korean War. Then he studied at the Manhattan School of Music; he also played in the Sauter-Finegan Orchestra, and then worked with Charlie Ventura (with whom he also recorded in 1977) and Louis Prima. In 1957 Eddie Sauter took Hildinger to Baden-Baden as a percussionist, pianist and arranger with the SWF dance orchestra. In 1960 he was involved as a vibraphonist in the production of Cool Velvet and Strings by Stan Getz. From that year he worked for Erwin Lehn, but also wrote music for television films and series, such as truck drivers. For three years, from 1967 to 1969, he directed the RIAS dance orchestra; then he returned to the United States. With Sperie Karas he recorded with the Karas-Hildinger Orchestra. He later taught at the University of Ottawa and played in the local jazz scene.
