This wonderful album was recorded in 1966. Bob Dorough's gentle Arkansas twang makes everything he sings sound rich and imbued with a casual nature that's reflective of his own personality. He's something like a softer-voiced and more cheerful Mose Allison. His career was given a boost in the '50s when Miles Davis first encountered him. Dorough ended up being the only singer to appear on any of Davis' albums, performing "Nothing Like You" on SORCERER, and "Blue Xmas" for the various-artist compilation, JINGLE BELL JAZZ. Dorough's recordings are few and far between--in fact, from the '70s onward he devoted most of his energies to writing music for programming produced by the Children's Television Workshop. Luckily, this gem has remained in print. Outside of the merit of his own material, anyone who can follow a Bob Dylan song with a Hoagy Carmichael cover deserves a listen. Dorough adds piano to his vocals, and is joined by a guitarist, drummer, and bass player.
