The Barrelhouse Jazzband Frankfurt was founded in 1953 as an amateur band, since the mid-1980s it has been working professionally and has become, over the years, the most internationally renowned jazz band in Germany. Over the years, the band has produced many records in the area of traditional jazz. She plays in the classical combo-ensemble with trumpet / trombone, clarinet / saxophone as well as a rhythm group from piano, guitar, bass and drums. In 1962, the primal occupation broke apart; Since then Reimer von Essen has been a bandleader and arranger. 1966 appeared the first LP (in the USA), some 25 more LPs and CDs have followed her. In 1968 the members of the band were appointed honorary citizens of New Orleans; Over the years, the band has been touring the country in more than 50 countries, often on behalf of the Goethe Institute in Africa and Asia.
On the "Barrelhouse Jazz Party" held annually in Frankfurt's Old Opera House since 1983, the band plays with legendary soloists of jazz history. She starred with Mezz Mezzrow, Arnett Cobb, Buddy Tate, Al Gray, Doc Cheatham, Clark Terry, Harry Sweets Edison, Jimmy Witherspoon, Bob Haggart, Sammy Price, Jay McShann, and Angela Brown. On the 40th anniversary of 1993, Lionel celebrated Hampton and his orchestra; Horst Lippmann published "The Barrelhouse Book" about the history of the band.
The band has been playing with Reimer von Essen and Frank Selten (clarinet, saxophone), Horst Schwarz (trumpet, trombone, vocals), Christof Sänger (piano), Roman Klöcker (guitar, banjo), Lindy Huppertsberg And Michael Ehret (drums). Manager of the Barrelhouse Jazzband has been Dieter Nentwig since 1971.
The band's participation in major jazz festivals in four continents and the Deutsche Schallplattenpreis 1977 (so far the only honor of this kind for traditional jazz from Germany) show the importance of the band.
Angi Domdey (1950 in Wetzlar) is a German jazz singer and songwriter. She was one of the renowned jazz and blues singers in Germany at a young age.
